Pickleball vs. Tennis: Which Court Should You Build?

Pickleball or tennis? Compare space, playing style, who will use the court and noise to decide which court fits your home, HOA or club.

Combined pickleball and basketball court with blue playing surface

Pickleball and tennis are both great sports, and both make great backyard and community courts. The right choice depends on your space, who will play and how you want to use the court.

Space needed

  • Pickleball: 20 x 44 foot playing area, with about 30 x 60 feet of total space recommended

  • Tennis: 36 x 78 foot playing area for doubles, with about 60 x 120 feet of total space recommended

A full tennis court needs roughly four times the space of a pickleball court. For many backyards, that alone decides it.

How each game plays

  • Pickleball is played with solid paddles and a plastic ball on a small court. Points are quick, rallies are social, and much of the game happens near the net.

  • Tennis uses strung rackets and a pressurized ball on a larger court. It involves more running and longer shots from the baseline.

Learning curve

Pickleball is easy for beginners to pick up, which makes it popular with families and mixed age groups. Tennis takes longer to learn but offers a lot of depth for players who want to keep improving.

Who will use the court

  • Families with kids and grandparents: pickleball is often the easier fit.

  • Experienced tennis players: tennis may be the only option that feels right.

  • HOAs and clubs: a tennis court footprint can fit up to four pickleball courts, so more people can play at once.

Noise

Pickleball paddles make a sharper popping sound than tennis rackets. For courts close to neighbors, it is worth thinking about placement, fencing and hours of play.

You can have both

If you have the space for a tennis court, you can add pickleball lines so both sports share the same surface. Read our guide on adding pickleball lines to a tennis court.

Quick comparison

  • Best for small yards: pickleball

  • Best for serious tennis players: tennis

  • Best for the most players at once: multiple pickleball courts

  • Best of both: a tennis court with blended pickleball lines
